Study indicates drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving

While many motorists are able to drive safely, others fail to uphold this duty each time they are behind the wheel of a vehicle. When a driver is distracted, reckless or intoxicated, this could create a very dangerous situation. However, this is not the only form of danger, as a driver could create a risky situation by getting behind the wheel when they are fatigued or drowsy.

Based on the results of a current study conducted by AAA, drowsy drivers a causing more automobile collisions, causing them to be just as dangerous as drunk drivers. This study pointed out that the number of crashes caused by fatigued drivers is underreported.

The findings of this study are based on the number of drivers caught on video footage either falling asleep behind the wheel or nodding off and barely missing a collision or causing a crash. It was found that 10 percent of crashes per year in the U.S. are due to drowsy driving.

When a driver is drowsy or falls asleep behind the wheel, a lot can happen in just a few seconds. A vehicle can cross into oncoming traffic, drift into another lane or even go off of the road. This is not only dangerous for the driver who is drowsy, but it creates risks for those traveling nearby as well. A serious crash could occur, resulting in accident victims suffering injuries and damages.

A negligent driver could cause significant harm in the event of an accident. Victims should take the time to understand what rights are afforded to them. A personal injury claim helps hold a negligent driver accountable for the harms and damages, while also assisting with the collection of compensation for the financial hardships experienced.
