Having a game plan for applying for SSD benefits

Permanent and temporary disabilities impact many Americans on a daily basis. While they may be able to make the changes necessary to overcome the challenges presented, this does not mean that they are able to live with a disability without seeking assistance. In fact, many of those living with a disability seek Social Security disability benefits to help offset the financial hardships caused by the situation.

When it comes to applying for SSD benefits, many are concerned that their application will be denied. These concerns are well founded in most cases, as roughly two-thirds of all applicants for Social Security disability benefits are initially denied.

However, to increase one’s odds of being approved, they must have a plan. In other words, it is important to take the time to understand the application process. To receive these benefits, one must be eligible. This means that they must be suffering from a qualifying disability that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.

To prove that one is living with a qualifying disability, they must have documentation. Meeting with a doctor and obtaining medical records can help with this evidence. Whether it is one’s primary caregiver or a specialist, this documentation can help illustrate not only that they are currently living with a disability but also indicates how long they are expected to suffer from it. By providing the necessary details and documentation, applicants can increase their chances of being approved for these benefits.

Although individuals see funds taken out of their paycheck each month for Social Security, many do not plan on using these benefits. This is mostly because they cannot imagine being unable to work because they have suffered a sudden debilitating illness or a disabling injury. Nonetheless, these benefits are designed to help people in these exact circumstances, making it vital to fully understand these benefits, how to obtain them and what to do if one is initially denied these benefits.
