SSD benefits will increase 2.8 percent

Living with a disability can present some challenges to individuals and families in Georgia and elsewhere. While accommodations can make it easier to live with a disability, is one is unable to work because of a disability, financial problems can really set in. Because of this, Social Security disability programs are often sought out for assistance. However, many still find it challenging to make ends meet, as it can be rather costly to meet one’s basic living needs.

The amount a recipient receives when they are approved of SSD benefits is related to the average cost of living. The Social Security Administration considers the cost of living adjustment when determining how much a recipient gets paid each month, and according to recent reports, this amount for 2019 will go up by 2.8 percent.

Federal law required that benefits rate increase when the cost of living rises, and because there has been an increase, these benefits need to also rise. What causes these costs to rise? This occurs when the prices an average consumer buys increases. In other words, the goods and services people purchase have become more expensive; therefore, the amount of federal benefits received must increase to keep up with these changes. This means that starting next year, more than 67 million Americans will experience a 2.8 percent increase in the amount of SSD benefits they receive.

Receiving SSD benefits can be a very important and crucial thing. Whether it is a disability caused by an accident or a medical condition, when a disability impacts a person’s earning capacity or the ability to work, SSD benefits become vital. Thus, it is important that individuals understand the application process and their rights when it comes to securing these often-necessary benefits.
