Roadway Work Zones….More Dangerous than you Think!

No matter where you live, it is likely that you encounter work being performed on the roadways near you on a routine basis. While work zones are inconvenient for drivers, they are also very dangerous. If you or a loved one has been hurt while driving through or working in a work zone, it is important to consult with a knowledgeable personal injury attorney to understand all of your legal options for recovering the maximum compensation for your damages incurred.

Individuals who work in roadway work zones must be fully aware of the dangerous conditions surrounding them. According to the Associated General Contractors of America (AGCA), an estimated 38% of highway construction workers report having a motorist erroneously enter into their restricted work area. Further, almost half of those workers report that it has occurred at least three times during the same construction season.

While the dangers to the workers in the work zones is apparent, motorists driving through the construction zones are also vulnerable to injury. The AGCA reports that drivers who have had an accident in a work zone suffer a higher rate of injury than the workers. Approximately 50% of the vehicle occupants were hurt in a work zone accident in comparison to 18% of the workers.

There is no magic formula for ensuring workers and motorists are safe in work zones, but every precautionary measure should be taken. Workers should always wear hardhats and bright colored and reflective clothing to make themselves more visible to motorists. If traffic is being re-routed, a variety of tools should be implemented to slow the drivers down including barrels, barriers, cones or other traffic control devices. As for drivers, slowing down and staying alert while driving through a work zone is the most important tip to prevent an accident.

There are several parties that may be liable for work zone accidents. If you or a loved one has been injured in a work zone, let us help.
